Cycle 5

Value scale

Materials: Number 2 pencil, sketchbook paper

This assignment was for us to practice shading from light to dark using both a pencil. We also did it with pen in class, which was a lot harder than doing it with pencil, as it's harder to create different shades. To make the scales, we did two different formats, one with squares in separate colors, and one which was a gradient. For the first scale we drew out different squares and each one was colored darker than the one before, to show different shades, and the second scale was a gradient that gradually became darker over time, and it is a lot more blended than the one with the squares. This exercise helped me be able to shade better with a pencil because I knew how to do darker and lighter shades to make my drawings look more realistic.

value Sphere

Materials: Number two pencil, sketchbook paper

This sphere was like a value scale but instead of drawing the shades out in a line, they were drawn out in a sphere format, with the darker colors on the bottom of the sphere, as it gradually gets lighter towards the top. At the top left corner of the sphere, there was a highlight in the shape of a circle, and around it, I drew rings of varying shades around it, just like the gradually darkening shades of the value scale but on the sphere. I also added a shadow underneath the sphere, to make it look more realistic.

color/fruit still life

Materials: Crayola color pencils, sketchbook paper

For this piece we were supposed to use color pencils to draw a picture of a fruit still-life reference, so we could learn to shade with color pencils as well. I decided to focus on the papaya and honeydew and used different color combinations with the color pencils to make it more realistic and more like the colors in the picture. One of the biggest challenges was the seeds, which I used a white gel pen to highlight the seeds and make them look like they had more dimension. I also drew the fruits around it, like oranges and grapefruit, as well as a cup, which I used the same techniques for the papaya, which was using and mixing different colored pencils and pressing down harder or lighter for shadows and highlights.

Car drawing

Materials: Number two pencil, Crayola color pencils, sketchbook paper

For this assignment we drew a car from a reference photo, and it also had a lot of different interesting angles relating to the wheels, the bumper, and the way the lights were placed, especially since the car was faced diagonally on the road. First I sketched out the car with pencil and I had to restart once because it did not turn out good the first time. I tried to make it look very accurate by studying the way that everything was placed. Then, I colored in the black accents and shaded in the windshield and the headlights so they looked more like glass, and colored in the background and the car. The background had a road and grass, so it was fairly simple to color in.

Real life sketches

Materials: Number two pencil, Crayola color pencils, sketchbook paper

This assignment was meant for us to draw things in real life that were in motion and live instead of drawing from a fixed reference photo. We did one in pencil and another in color. For the one in pencil we were supposed to draw three items. I chose to draw my mom, a lemon, and a leaf in my backyard. My mom was definitely the hardest thing to draw, as she moved more than the plants, and the drawing did not turn out looking exactly like her but I tried to make it look more like her. I also drew the leaves and the lemon by trying to shade them to look more realistic using my pencil. For the drawing in color I drew the same lemon using different shades of yellow and green pencils. To make it look like the lemon in real life I tried to show all the shadows using darker colors to show where the leaves were shadowed and how they came in front of the lemon.
